Here are a few lessons in downsizing I’ve learned along the way.
Holidays Won’t Be the Same
It’s a little strange to realize you won’t have Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas mornings in your childhood home again. And if your parents are like mine, they’ll be opting for an apartment with far fewer bedrooms for you and your siblings to crash in.
On the upside, you’ll get to play tourist in your hometown! When visiting your parents, opt for a local hotel and revel in the fact that you won’t need to fight your siblings to use the shower in the morning.
Childhood Mementos Sometimes Have to Go
My parents’ new space simply didn’t have room for every drawing I’d done over the years. My equally small apartment didn’t have a lot of space to spare. I had to harness my inner Marie Kondo when deciding what to keep – and cut myself some slack for tossing pieces my mom had deemed as worth saving.
It’s For the Best
Realizing your parents are aging is tough. However, downsizing to an apartment or condo typically comes with many advantages. There’s usually less to clean, no yards to maintain, and maintenance staff on site if something goes wrong. So ultimately, it’s an easy decision to get behind.
